Chapter Ten:
Retribution
âI will have such revenges on you both
That all the world shallâI will do such thingsâ
What they are yet I know not, but they shall be
The terrors of the earth.â
William Shakespeare, King Lear
âAlright, heâs asleep, and his fever is gone, for now at least.â Edith shut the door to her fatherâs room as she spoke with Lilly in the hallway.
âI donât fully understand where the fever is coming from.â Lilly crossed her arms.
âTough to say.â Edith shrugged. âIf the doctor had come, then maybe he couldâve told us. He had lots of bruising on his face and chest. Maybe there is an open wound that was infected? Iâd say a concussion is most likely what he is suffering from, but Iâm not sure if that causes fevers. Maybe one of his bones is broken? I donât know how any of it works, really.â
âWhatever the case, I think your quick actions helped him.â Lilly rubbed Edithâs shoulder.
âThat was Mrs. Baumann, not me.â Edith shook her head.
âThe tea was your idea.â Lilly tried to console her sister.
âThis was my faultââEdith pointed to their fatherâs doorâ âand I donât know how to live with that.â
âWe move forward.â Lilly nodded. âI need your help taking revenge. The major is a wicked, vile man, and he needs to pay for what heâs done. Not just to us, but to many families like ours.â
âIâm still surprised that I believed the propaganda without question,â Edith scoffed. âIâm ashamed that it took experiencing even a fraction of what Jewish people, or political opponents, are going through for me to open my mind. I imagined that I was the clever one out of the two of us, but youâve outwitted me, my dear sister.â
âThatâs not too difficult.â Lilly gave a wry smile.
âYou brat!â Edith offered a playful smack on Lillyâs arm.
âWhatever the case,â Lilly laughed, âIâm glad to have my sister back. Letâs agree to put aside these petty differences of ours, for Papaâs sake.â
âI couldnât agree more.â Edith massaged her forehead. âAnyways, Iâm going to run to the market. Iâll collect some more items for Papa, and see about some food as well.â
âWould you like company?â
âNo.â Edith shook her head. âYou should stay here with him.â
âI suppose itâs suitable that we have the Society meeting tonight so that we can learn about cooking and such.â Lilly rolled her eyes.
âIâll see if I canât find a maid while Iâm out as well.â
âYou should speak withââ Lilly paused, wondering if she could truly trust Edith.
âSpeak with who?â Edith frowned.
âSergeant Wolf.â Lilly continued as she swallowed.
âFor the maid?â Edith grew confused.
âYes.â Lilly nodded. âHe and Papa had an, um, arrangement.â
âRuth was Jewish after all?â Edith stared at her feet in disbelief.
âFortunately, Sergeant Wolf is a friend of ours, and he was able to convince the major that the documents were legitimate.â
âThat is fortunate.â Edith threw her eyebrows up.
âI donât know how extensive the plan was but, essentially, Papa was going to hire and fire âmaidsâ in an effort to help them out of the country.
